The Spink Walk

One of the best walks and most spectacular in the Wicklow Mountains National Park is the Spink Walk around the upper lake in Glendalough. It is not unusual to see red deer, feral goats and peregrin falcons. The walk starts in the car park by the upper lake and can be walked in either direction but I prefer going anti clockwise as the climb is more gradual and if the weather is good you can cool off by going for a dip in the plunge pool at the top of the zigzag miners path.It takes about 3 hours but allow a little extra for a lunch break (but the ice cream van and chipper in the car park are the favorite location for the end of hike refreshments). The walk is along forest tracks and on a board walk higher up so relativley easy from a navigational point of view for such a high level route. However just like all hill walks in Wicklow you need to be prepared for changes in the weather. Each member should have proper foot wear, wet weather gear, hat and gloves and warm cloths.
